Spain Pick-and-Roll: how it works, how Swish & Dunk simulates it and which players it needs
The Spain pick-and-roll takes the most common action in basketball and adds a twist that breaks the defense's timing. A big sets a high screen for the point guard and rolls to the rim, and just as his defender drops to stop him, a teammate sets a back screen on that defender. The roller is free; if the help comes, the screener pops out for a three. In Swish & Dunk it is the pick-and-roll system that rewards off-ball movement. This guide explains how it works on a real court, exactly how the match engine simulates it and which skills your cards need.
Spain Pick-and-Roll at a glance
- Identity: high pick-and-roll plus a back screen on the roller's defender: lobs, layups and pop threes.
- In the engine: pick-and-roll ×1.40 (second only to Spread Pick-and-Roll), off-ball screens ×1.35, three-point ×1.15, paint ×1.05, isolation ×0.85, post-up ×0.90, turnover risk ×1.02. Normal tempo and ball movement.
- Key skills: Pick & Roll Handler and Pass Accuracy on the point guard; Pick & Roll Roll Man, Screening and Close Shot on the big; Off-Ball Movement and Catch and Shoot on the wings.
- Best against: Match-Up Zone (53.4%). Worst against: Full-Court Press (46.2%) and Half-Court Trap (47.8%).
What is the Spain pick-and-roll?
The Spain pick-and-roll gets its name from the Spanish national team, which turned it into a trademark in international tournaments in the early 2010s, with a generation of guards and big men raised on pick-and-roll basketball in the Liga ACB. NBA coaching staffs noticed, and within a few years the action, also called "stack pick-and-roll", appeared in almost every playbook.
Its success comes from the way modern teams defend the pick-and-roll. The roller's defender has to do two things at once: help on the ball handler and recover to the rim. The back screen hits him exactly in that moment. If the defense switches to stop the roller, the back screener is open behind the arc; if it stays home, the lob is there.
How the Spain pick-and-roll works on the court
- High ball screen. The big screens for the point guard at the top of the key.
- Back screen on the roller's defender. A guard or wing, stationed behind the action, screens the defender who should cover the roll.
- Roll or pop. The big rolls free to the rim; the back screener pops out to the three-point line.
- Read the help. The ball handler chooses between the lob, the pop three and his own shot.
It is often run out of a horns alignment, with one big setting the ball screen and the other walking into the back screen. It needs precise timing and a big who rolls hard.
How Swish & Dunk simulates the Spain pick-and-roll
The Swish & Dunk match engine simulates every possession as a chain of decisions: who handles the ball, which action he runs, who shoots and from where. These are Spain's levers compared with the neutral value of 1.00:
| Lever | Spain PnR | What it means in a game |
|---|---|---|
| Pick-and-roll | ×1.40 | The main action. Only Spread Pick-and-Roll (×1.45) runs more. |
| Off-ball screens | ×1.35 | The back screen: easier finishes for the roller and easier catch-and-shoot threes. |
| Three-point shots | ×1.15 | Pop threes from the screener and the shooters. |
| Paint shots | ×1.05 | A slight lean toward the rim. |
| Isolation | ×0.85 | Fewer one-on-one possessions: the screen comes first. |
| Post-up | ×0.90 | Bigs roll instead of posting up. |
| Offensive rebounding | ×0.95 | Shooters stay spaced. |
| Transition | ×0.95 | About 14% of possessions start as fast breaks. |
| Turnover risk | ×1.02 | Practically neutral: 14.6 turnovers per game in the tactics lab. |
| Pace, ball movement and star usage | ×1.00 | Neutral. |
More pick-and-rolls
Once the handler is chosen, he picks between an isolation, a pick-and-roll, a post-up and a kick-out. For an illustrative point guard with Ball Handle 82, Off-Dribble Shot 80, Pick & Roll Handler 80 and passing ratings of 75, pick-and-rolls rise from about 30% of his plays in a balanced offense to about 41%, mostly at the expense of isolations. In a pick-and-roll the shot can go to the handler, to a rolling big chosen by Pick & Roll Roll Man, Screening and Close Shot, or to a popping shooter; a big who shoots well from outside can also pop instead of rolling.
The back screen in numbers
The off-ball screen lever is what makes Spain different from a normal pick-and-roll. The engine gives a bonus to rolls to the rim, pick-and-pop jumpers and catch-and-shoot shots: +5 percentage points for every full point of the lever above 1.00, scaled by the shooter's Off-Ball Movement. At ×1.35 a roller with Off-Ball Movement 60 gets about +1.1 points on every finish, a wing shooter with 80 about +1.4 points on every catch-and-shoot three. The same lever also makes the engine favor players with good Off-Ball Movement when it picks who receives the kick-out.
In the tactics lab bigs take 44.4% of the team's shots (42.1% in a balanced offense), threes are 44.2% of attempts and 60.6% of baskets are assisted: a pick-and-roll offense that shares the shots between handler, roller and shooters.
The ideal Spain pick-and-roll players and the skills to look for
Spain needs a classic pick-and-roll duo and wings who move without the ball. The skill names are the ones on the player cards.
| Position | Key skills | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Point guard | Pick & Roll Handler, Pass Accuracy, Court Vision, Ball Security | Runs the action and chooses between lob, pop and his own shot. |
| Shooting guard | Off-Ball Movement, Catch and Shoot, Three-Point Shot, Screening | The back screener who pops for three. |
| Small forward | Catch and Shoot, Off-Ball Movement, Three-Point Shot | Spaces the weak side and punishes the help. |
| Power forward | Three-Point Shot, Screening, Pick & Roll Roll Man | A second screener who can pop. |
| Center | Pick & Roll Roll Man, Screening, Close Shot, Dunk, Off-Ball Movement | The roller who finishes the lob: Off-Ball Movement scales the back-screen bonus. |

Spain Pick-and-Roll matchups
Measured in the tactics lab (October 2026) with the same identical teams, the same "fair mix" opponent and the same 1,404 games per matchup as the original study, margin of error about ±2.6 points. The raw data of the seven new offenses is published as summary-new-offenses.json.
| Defense | Win % | Points per 100 possessions | Turnovers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Match-Up Zone | 53.4% | 118.6 | 11.3 |
| No-Middle | 51.2% | 116.8 | 13.3 |
| Switch-Everything | 51.0% | 116.7 | 14.8 |
| Pack Line | 49.9% | 117.6 | 13.0 |
| Drop Coverage | 49.9% | 117.8 | 12.9 |
| Man-to-Man | 49.6% | 117.2 | 14.5 |
| Half-Court Trap | 47.8% | 115.3 | 18.4 |
| Full-Court Press | 46.2% | 115.1 | 20.5 |
A balanced profile, close to the Spread Pick-and-Roll: it does a little better against the zone, which struggles to track a screen away from the ball, and holds even against Drop Coverage and Pack Line, the two defenses built to contain the pick-and-roll. Its weak spot is the same as every pick-and-roll offense: defenses that attack the ball before the screen arrives. The three rules behind every matchup are in the matchup section of the study.
Which defense to pair with the Spain pick-and-roll
- Drop Coverage: the big who rolls in attack protects the rim in defense.
- Switch-Everything: wings who set and use screens are often versatile enough to switch.
- Man-to-Man: the neutral, no-gamble choice.
Common Spain pick-and-roll mistakes
- Ignoring Off-Ball Movement. It scales the back-screen bonus: without it Spain is just a slightly weaker Spread Pick-and-Roll.
- A big who does not roll. Without Pick & Roll Roll Man and Close Shot the lob is not a threat.
- Keeping it against pressure. Against press and trap the ball never reaches the screen: the Post Hub and the Princeton handle pressure better.
Related offenses
- Spread Pick-and-Roll: the pure two-man game, with even more pick-and-rolls and no back screen.
- Horns Offense: the alignment Spain is often run from.
- Split Action: screens away from the ball as the whole offense, not as a twist.
- Heliocentric Offense: the pick-and-roll as a tool for one star.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Spain pick-and-roll?
A Spain pick-and-roll is a high pick-and-roll with a third player added: as the big rolls to the rim, a guard or wing sets a back screen on the roller's defender. The roller gets free for a lob or a layup, and if the defense helps, the back screener pops out for an open three.
Why is it called Spain pick-and-roll?
It takes its name from the Spanish national team, which made the action a signature of its offense in international tournaments in the early 2010s. NBA and EuroLeague teams adopted it widely in the following years, often running it out of a horns alignment.
How do you defend a Spain pick-and-roll?
It is hard to defend because three defenders must coordinate: the roller's defender is screened from behind exactly when he should be dropping or recovering. In the Swish & Dunk tactics lab the defenses that hurt it most are the ones that hunt the ball before the action starts: Full-Court Press (46.2%) and Half-Court Trap (47.8%).
What players do you need for the Spain pick-and-roll in Swish & Dunk?
A point guard with Pick & Roll Handler and Pass Accuracy, a big with Pick & Roll Roll Man, Screening and Close Shot, and wings with Off-Ball Movement and Catch and Shoot. Off-Ball Movement matters more here than in most systems, because it decides how much the back screen frees the shooter and the roller.
What is the difference between Spain and Spread pick-and-roll?
Spread Pick-and-Roll keeps the other three players spaced and still. The Spain version adds a screen away from the ball: in Swish & Dunk it uses slightly fewer pick-and-rolls (×1.40 against ×1.45) but adds an off-ball screen lever of ×1.35 that makes rolls and catch-and-shoot shots easier.
The Spain Pick-and-Roll is one of fifteen offensive systems in Swish & Dunk: the complete tactics guide compares them all, together with the eight defenses.
